New Senate Bill 407 from Kirk Watson

Texting is a big part of life these days. The only ones who don’t text are those who can’t afford a cell phone or are too ignorant to learn new technology. Texting is an innovative and quick way to communicate however, with the good is the bad. It also seems to be an easier way to get yourself in trouble.  People are not only communicating with words but also through pictures in what is referred to as “sexting”.  Not everyone does it but according the Austin Chronicle, those who do could find themselves in hot water if they are not careful about whom they are sending their “sexts” to. People receiving them could also get in trouble. It is not clear whether this bill will be given a lot of attention because if an underage child were to send out or receive inappropriate pictures, the offender could be prosecuted under state felony child porn laws. This bill would not only apply to adults but children as well. If the bill passes punishment could range from a year in jail to an anti-sexting class for a child and his/her parents.  This article is rather important because it could keep a girl from losing her innocence at too young of an age and maybe pull a tighter rein on pedophiles looking for new ways to get to their young prey. I think this bill should refer more to the younger population who are more vulnerable and feel the pressure to do things they don’t want to do just to feel accepted.
